The closing date for our Bedroom Tax petition to Edinburgh Council is Friday 5th April. The petition calls on the Council to commit to not evicting tenants who fall into rent arrears due to their housing benefit being cut.

Resistance to the Bedroom Tax – what you can do

1. Sign the petition to City of Edinburgh Council.  Ask your friends, family and neighbours to do the same.
The City of Edinburgh Council currently has a policy of evicting tenants if they cannot pay rent. Please sign the petition calling on the City of Edinburgh Council not to evict tenants who fall into rent arrears if it is shown that their failure to pay rent is due to lack of benefit income. You must live in Edinburgh to sign this petition. 

2. Sign the petition to the Scottish Parliament at: 

3. Put a resolution to your trade union, tenants group and/or community group. Click here to download model resolution.

4. Tell your friends, family and neighbours; leaflet your street or hand leaflets out at your work – printed leaflets and stickers will be available at upcoming meetings of Edinburgh East Save Our Services, Greater Leith Against The Cuts and North Edinburgh Fights Back.

Resistance to the bedroom tax – meetings this week

This week there will be two meetings discussing resistance to the bedroom tax. For more info on the bedroom tax click here.

Edinburgh East Save Our Services will be meeting at 6.30pm on Tuesday 19th February at Northfield / Willowbrae Community Centre, 10 Northfield Road, EH8 7PP. This meeting will focus on developing a petition to take to Edinburgh Council on the bedroom tax and producing and distributing leaflets.

On Thursday there will be an organising meeting in Pennywell to plan a public meeting on the same topic called by North Edinburgh Fights Back, Edinburgh Tenants’ Federation, Tenants and Residents in Pilton (TRIP) and Tenants and Residents in Muirhouse (TRIM). It will be at 6pm in North Edinburgh Arts Centre, 15a Pennywell Court EH4 4TZ.

Both these meetings are open to all.

Fighting the Welfare Reform Act

The East Edinburgh Save Our Services campaign had a successful public meeting in Portobello Town Hall on Friday 7th September. The main theme of the meeting, which was attended by over a 100 people, was opposition to the Welfare Reform Act, which came into force in March 2012. A range of speakers and members of the audience
were very critical of the Act.
